BEACH VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

Although the game of volleyball stems back to the 1800s, the first game of beach volleyball was played in 1915, when a Hawaiian canoe club set up a court on Waikiki Beach. Many people believe that beach volleyball also has ties to sunny California, where games were organised in Santa Monica in the 1920s.

At first, the sport was seen as more of a leisurely pastime than a competitive sport — and due to its low cost (since all you need is a net, a ball and a beach), its appeal quickly spread around the world to countries like Latvia, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia. The time when beach volleyball really flourished was during the Great Depression. Cash-strapped Americans used beach volleyball as an almost-free source of entertainment since it was so budget-friendly. And by the time the ‘50s hit, loads of competitions were held in California.

As beach volleyball became more widespread, it wasn’t long before sponsors gathered to take advantage of this game’s popularity and so, beach volleyball became a fully-fledged competitive sport by the 1970s, as more and more pro beach volleyball tournaments were organised. This led to the sport being recognised by the International Volleyball Federation in 1986, which prompted its intercontinental takeover as the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour spread from the US to Europe and Asia.

Beach volleyball was a demonstration sport at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and, not that long after, the International Olympic Committee announced that the sport would be included in the 1996 games in Atlanta. The ‘99 world tour featured 12 open events for men and six for women, and attracted over 460,000 spectators — this number only continued to grow over the years.

Now an official Olympic sport, beach volleyball fans grow in number almost every day. It wasn’t long until casinos caught on and featured beach volleyball tournaments and events in their sportsbooks. Speaking of which, let’s take a look at some of the largest beach volleyball events.

Beach volleyball was first introduced to the Olympics in the ‘92 Summer Olympic Games as a demonstration event. It was then announced by the International Olympic Committee that beach volleyball would become an official Olympic sport as of 1996.

World Championships

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships is a professional global competition organised by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball. The first rendition of this high-calibre event was held in Los Angeles in the United States in 1997. Prior to this, 10 unofficial championships were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between ‘87 and ‘96 — but these were not organised by the FIVB. The last championships took place in Hamburg, Germany in 2019.

World Tour

The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is a massive global beach volleyball tournament featuring matches for both men and women, organised by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball. This elite world tour was introduced in 1989 with the first all-men’s tour — women first competed later on in 1992.

In 2021, the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour features seven FIVB World Tour 4-star tournaments, three FIVB World Tour 2-star, 10 FIVB World Tour 1-star and the World Tour Finals. Becoming a World Tour champion is considered one of the highest honours of professional beach volleyball, surpassed only by the World Championships and the Summer Olympics.
